This bird is a wonder, when you are digging in the garden and hear a shoosh you look up quickly to see him as he passes over you and see a large spread of bright red on the underside of his wings. This is a Northern Flicker. There are two varieties...the east-coast bird has bright sunshine yellow under its wings and the west-coast bird has the red under its wings. His favorite food is ants so you may see him on the ground looking thru rotted wood that has fallen. On their chest one feather has one dot so when you look at his feather vest it appears to be all little black dots. I have them in my garden and think they are a very beautiful bird. This painting is part of a series of 10 paintings, so groupings can be made. The other paintings that go with it are House Finch, Southern Screech Owl, Cedar Waxwing, Bluebird on Nandina, Mockingbird on Holly,Cedar Waxwings on Pyracantha pair, Woodland Chickadee, and Carolina Wren on Mahonia Berries.
